The italicized words in the exercises are from the reading. You probably understood them in the
context. The context is the words and sentences around a word. Try to understand a new word from
the context. This skill is an important part of reading better. Study these example.
1. The verb to be gives a definition.
Doctors are physicians
2. The word or often gives a synonym. A synonym is a word with the same meaning as another
word.
Doctor use drugs, or medicines, to heal their patients.
3. A synonym may be given in the sentences before or after the new word.
Doctors try to prevent disease. Vaccinations stop diseases like smallpox.
